Agathology — (from the Greek agathos - good, and logos - word). Part of practical philosophy, containing the doctrine of the highest bliss, is a philosophical and theological term that denotes the doctrine of good, its nature and meaning.
The word comes from the Greek roots:
ἀγαθός (agathos) - "good, kind";
λογία (logia) - "teaching, science".
In a broad sense, agathology explores the essence of good, its manifestations in the world and its meaning for man. This is an area of reflection associated with ethics, metaphysics and theology, as well as with concepts related to morality and ethics.
Main aspects of Agathology:
The nature of goodness:
Agathology asks the question: what is goodness?
It considers goodness as a universal principle, a fundamental value or quality that is associated with perfection, harmony and happiness.
Goodness in the context of theology:
In religious teachings, goodness is often associated with the will of God or the divine nature.
In Christianity, goodness is often interpreted through the concepts of love, justice and mercy.
Relationship with metaphysics:
Agathology can explore whether goodness is an objective category (independent of man) or subjective (created by human perception and culture).
It asks whether goodness exists as an independent principle or is merely the absence of evil.
Practical goodness:
How is goodness manifested in human actions?
How should a person behave in order for his actions to be considered “good”?
It explores the influence of moral behavior on personal and social well-being.
Connection with philosophical and ethical trends:
Platonism: In Plato's teaching, good is the highest idea, the source of all being and knowledge. In his philosophy, agathology manifests itself as a reflection on the path to true good through knowledge.
Aristotelianism: Aristotle considered good as the goal of life, associated with the achievement of happiness (eudaimonia, eudaimonia) through virtues.
Christian agathology: In Christian philosophy, good is closely associated with God. For example, St. Augustine argued that evil is the absence of good, and true good is possible only in union with God.
Kantian tradition: Immanuel Kant considered good through the category of duty: good is what is done out of respect for the moral law.
Agathology in modern times:
Today, agathology is found in discussions of moral values, ethical dilemmas, and moral education. Its ideas help in:
Analysis of moral principles underlying legislation and social norms.
Understanding modern challenges such as global justice, environmental ethics, artificial intelligence ....
History.
The concept of agatology was formed in the 18th century, although the problematic itself had already been developed in the philosophy of the Ancient East and antiquity. The modern period of agatology began with the publication of J. Moore's treatise "Principia Ethica" (19др.- еврейское и т. п. 3), which clarified the logical-semantic nature of ethical judgments involving the terms "good", "non-good" and "behavior" and the possibility of defining these initial terms.
The doctrine of the good is developed by the phenomenological school of M. Scheler, M. Hartmann and G. Rainer. Criticism of the subject of agatology from the standpoint of analyzing statements about the good (as meaningless) is given by C. Ogden, B. Russell, M. Shlyk, A. Ayer. V. Shokhin in his work “Agatology: Modernity and Classics” positions agatology not just as a philosophical subdiscipline, which
is located at the intersection of ethics and anthropology, but as the fourth program in metaethics after utilitarian, deontological and aretic.
The task of agatology is to establish the meaning of the concepts of good, the highest good, good; the possibility of knowing the good and the bad; determining the need to create a hierarchy of goods; clarifying the relationship between different types of goodness and ways of distributing them among members of society ....
In social philosophy, the question of good is considered in the context of the problems of the existence of human society, the choice of the most optimal paths for its development - the search for that social ideal, the achievement of which could maximally improve the life of each person individually and the whole society as a whole.
